Camping Floor Mattress: One Foam Mattress for Camp, Guests and Sleepovers

By The Hazli Family — Peter & Louise · November 1, 2026

Quick answer: A camping floor mattress is a roll-up foam mattress that goes straight on the ground, a tent floor, a car floor or a bedroom floor, with no frame, pump or cot. The useful ones share three traits: real foam depth (three or four inches), a waterproof cover you can take off and wash, and a carry bag so it rolls up and goes in a closet between uses. Buy one of those and it can handle your camping trips, your overnight guests and your kids' sleepovers.

We make one: the Hazli Matrix Air-Cell memory foam camping mattress, which comes in six sizes and has exactly that cover. This post is about choosing and using a floor mattress for all three jobs. For the material itself, read our memory foam camping mattress guide.

What counts as a floor mattress

The phrase gets used for several things: tri-fold foam pads, thin futons, air beds, and roll-up foam mattresses. For the three-job use in this post, the roll-up foam type wins, because:

  • it does not need a pump or power, so it works in a tent, a car and a spare room the same way;
  • it has no air to lose overnight, so a guest gets the same bed on night three as on night one;
  • it bridges small lumps and gaps (a tent floor over roots, a car's seat gap, a rug edge);
  • it rolls into a bag that can go in a closet or on a garage shelf.

The trade-off is that foam is heavier and bulkier than air. If you need something that packs tiny for a flight, it is the wrong type. If it rides in a car or lives in a closet, the bulk matters less and the comfort matters more.

Why the cover is the whole decision

A floor mattress lives a harder life than a bed. It gets put on damp ground, a child spills juice on it, a dog sleeps on it, a guest arrives in the rain. A waterproof cover helps keep all of that out of the foam.

What to check, in order:

  1. Waterproof, not water-resistant. Read the listing carefully.
  2. Removable. A zip-off cover means you can wash the cover, not sponge the mattress.
  3. Machine washable. Hand-wash-only covers end up not being washed.
  4. Comfortable under a sheet. Put a fitted sheet over the top for the best feel.

The Hazli cover is waterproof, removable and machine washable. We have a whole post on why a waterproof camping mattress matters if you want the long version.

Tip: Keep a fitted sheet rolled up with the mattress. The sheet gets washed after every use, and the cover only when it needs it.

Job one: camping

In a tent, lay the mattress on the tent floor over a footprint, head at the uphill end, and leave a gear strip along one side. In a car, fold the seats, level the floor, and lay the mattress along the wheel wells. In both cases, unroll it as soon as you arrive, because memory foam needs time to expand back to its full height after being rolled. Our guides on sleeping comfortably in a tent and setting up a car camping bed go through each.

Pick the size by measuring the floor, not by the tent's "sleeps N" rating or the car's name. The camping mattress sizes guide lists all six Hazli sizes with the spaces they usually fit.

Job two: the guest bed

This is the use that surprises people. A three- or four-inch memory foam mattress on a bedroom floor can be a comfortable bed for a visiting adult: no sofa-bed crossbar and no pump running at midnight.

How to set it up well:

  • Unroll it the morning the guest arrives, or the night before, so it is at full height.
  • Put it on carpet or a rug if you can; on hard floor, a folded blanket underneath helps keep it from sliding.
  • Make it like a bed: fitted sheet, flat sheet or duvet, two pillows.
  • Leave a lamp and a glass of water within reach, because the bed is low.

For two guests, the Queen (80 × 60 × 4 inches) is a two-person bed. For one, the Twin XL (80 × 40 × 4) gives a tall adult more length with the four-inch depth. The Single (75 × 30 × 3) is the one to keep if closet space is tight.

Job three: sleepovers and movie nights

Kids mostly care about not being on the carpet. The Kids size (62 × 26 × 3) is sized for one child. Two or three Kids mattresses in a row make a sleepover setup, and each one rolls back up in the morning.

This is also where the waterproof cover helps. Popcorn or juice: strip the sheet, wipe the cover or zip it off and wash it. See camping mattresses for kids for more on choosing a child's mattress.

Tip: Give each mattress its own fitted sheet color, so the kids know whose is whose.

Keeping one mattress good for all three

  • Air it after use. Stand it on its side for an hour before rolling, and don't roll it damp.
  • Roll from the foot end so the head end unrolls first next time, and strap it snug but not crushed.
  • Store it dry. A closet is better than a damp garage. If it will be stored for months, unroll it a day before the next use. Our post on storing a foam camping mattress has the details.
  • Wash the cover when it needs it. The sheet takes most of the wear.

Our recommendation

If you want one mattress that does camping, guests and sleepovers, the Hazli Matrix Air-Cell memory foam camping mattress is the one we recommend. It was named Best Camping Mattress in the USA for 2025 by Best of Best Review. The cover is waterproof, removable and machine washable. Every Hazli product is CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified. Six sizes, from Kids (62 × 26 × 3) to Queen (80 × 60 × 4), each with a roll-up carry bag.

The trade-offs: it is heavier and bulkier than an air bed, it takes cargo space in the car, and it needs time to expand after you unroll it, so it is not a last-minute item. You have 30 days from delivery to decide. It is sold here, on Amazon US and on Amazon Canada. Compare sizes on the memory foam camping mattress collection.
