Pick how you camp and what the forecast says — we'll build your pre-sleep checklist, from finding flat ground to the right mattress under your back. Bad camp sleep is a setup problem, and setup is fixable.

1Pick your spot before dark

Where you sleep decides how you sleep. Do this while there's still light.

Find genuinely flat ground

Do the lie-down test before you pitch — your body finds slopes your eyes miss. If you must slope, sleep with your head uphill.

Clear the floor plan

Sweep away rocks, roots, and pinecones from the whole tent footprint. One forgotten pinecone owns your 2 a.m.

Stay out of dips and gullies rain & cold matter most

Cold air and rainwater both pool in low spots. Camp slightly elevated, never in a drainage line — and never dig trenches.

Park dead level

Open a bubble-level app, lay the phone on the cargo floor, and adjust. Even a 2–3° tilt has you sliding into the tailgate all night. Nose slightly uphill beats downhill.

Level the rig, then chock

Side-to-side first with leveling blocks, then front-to-back with the tongue jack or ramps. Chock the wheels before anyone climbs in — a rocking RV wakes light sleepers.

Decide your morning sun policy

An east-facing door or windshield means a bright, warm 6 a.m. Great in cold weather, brutal if you want to sleep in — orient accordingly.

Chase afternoon shade hot

A tent or car that bakes until sunset is an oven at bedtime. Pick the spot that's shaded from 3 p.m. on, and bedtime gets 10 degrees cooler.

Map the noise before you commit

Generators, the bathhouse path, and the camp road are the three sleep killers. Walk the site for one minute and listen.

Camp 200 feet from water

Lakeshores and creeks are colder, damper, and buggier at night — and Leave No Trace asks for the distance anyway.

Put your door out of the wind cold / rain

Face the door away from the prevailing wind and use natural windbreaks — boulders, treelines. Wind steals more heat than air temperature does.

2Build the sleep surface

The ground is the biggest thief of warmth and comfort. This layer matters more than anything you put on top.

Put a moisture barrier under the tent

A footprint or waterproof ground mat blocks ground damp, protects the tent floor, and adds a whisper of insulation.

Choose insulation over air

Air mattresses pump cold ground air directly under your back all night — and they leak. A self-inflating memory foam camping mattress insulates, never needs a pump, and can't go flat at 3 a.m.

Do the R-value math

Pad insulation is rated in R-value: R1–2 for summer, R3–4 for three-season, R4.5+ on snow. The number matters more than the thickness.

Fold flat, then fill the gaps

Drop the seats, then level the dips with duffels or foam before bedding goes in. The Single 75"×30" size of our camping mattress fits flat in most SUVs and evens everything out.

Fix the factory mattress

Stock RV mattresses are famously thin. A memory foam mattress as a replacement or topper is the single biggest comfort upgrade an RV gets per dollar.

Let the mattress breathe

Moisture condenses where warm bedding meets the cold metal floor. Flip the mattress up and air the car for ten minutes each morning — skip it, and by night three the car smells like a locker room.

Double the under-layer cold

Insulation stacks: a closed-cell foam pad under your mattress adds warmth the same way two blankets beat one. R-values add up.

Test the full setup at home once

Inflate it, lie on it, sleep a night on it in the living room if you can. Camp is a bad place to discover a problem.

3Bedding & warmth

Dial in what's on top of you for the actual forecast, not the brochure weather.

Rate your bag 10°F below the forecast low

Bag ratings are survival ratings, not comfort ratings. If the night says 45°F, sleep in a 35°F bag.

Keep one dry, dedicated set of sleep clothes

Never sleep in what you cooked or hiked in — it's damp, it smells like dinner to wildlife, and dry fabric is what actually keeps you warm.

Pack the cold kit cold

A bag liner (+10°F), dedicated wool sleep socks, and a beanie. Most body heat escapes where the bag can't cover.

Swap the bag for a sheet hot

On hot nights, sleep under a light quilt or cotton sheet on top of your mattress and keep the bag unzipped as a backup layer.

Bring a real pillow

When you're not carrying it on your back, the home pillow comes camping. It's the cheapest sleep upgrade that exists.

Compressible pillow, not a stuff-sack of clothes

A real compressible pillow weighs ~3 oz more than the jacket-in-a-bag trick and is worth every gram for your neck.

Hot water bottle, 20 minutes early cold

Boil water, fill a leak-proof bottle, drop it in the footbox before you get in. You climb into a warm bed instead of warming a cold one.

Kids sleep on home rules

Same bedtime routine, their own pillowcase, the favorite stuffed animal. For routine-sensitive kids, their weighted blanket from home turns a strange tent into a familiar bed.

4Make it dark and quiet

Campgrounds are bright and loud in ways bedrooms aren't. Control both.

Cover every window

Window shades (or cut-to-fit Reflectix panels) block the streetlamp, the 5:45 sunrise, and curious eyes — and they insulate. The single most important car-sleeping item.

Blackout shades down, vent fan on

The fan does double duty: airflow plus a steady white noise that swallows campground sounds.

Eye mask and earplugs, always

Summer sun rises before 6 and tent walls might as well be lampshades. Foam earplugs handle the early generator two sites over.

Run a small battery fan hot

Moving air feels 5–8 degrees cooler and doubles as white noise. Clip it above your head, not at your feet.

Switch to red light after dark

Red headlamp mode (or a dimmable lantern on its lowest setting) preserves night vision and doesn't snap anyone's brain awake at midnight.

5The last ten minutes

A short routine before lights-out prevents almost every middle-of-the-night problem.

Vent the tent cold / rain

Crack the vents even when it's cold — your breath is a pint of water a night, and sealed tents rain condensation on your bag by 3 a.m.

Cross-vent two windows

Crack two windows an inch on opposite diagonal corners — one window stalls, two create flow. Two sleepers exhale about a liter of water a night; without airflow it ends up on the glass and in your bedding. Rain guards make it work in any weather.

Beat the humidity before it beats you

For multi-night car sleeping, put a moisture-absorber tub (or a sock of silica cat litter) on the dash, and keep a small towel by the bed to wipe the morning glass. Dry car, dry bedding, clear windows at sunrise.

Bathroom trip, non-negotiable

The 1 a.m. walk to the bathhouse in the cold is the most preventable bad moment in camping.

Warm drink yes, nightcap no cold

Tea or cocoa warms you going in. Alcohol feels warm and then drops your core temperature for the rest of the night.

Warm up before you climb in cold

Thirty jumping jacks before bed. A sleeping bag keeps heat — it doesn't make it. Go in warm and stay warm.

Tomorrow's clothes sleep with you cold

Pull tomorrow's base layer into the bag tonight. Dressing inside the warmth at 7 a.m. is a different life.

Water and headlamp within arm's reach

Set them by your head before lights-out, phone on airplane mode. Everything you might want at night, findable without sitting up.

Camping sleep FAQ

What is the best mattress for camping?

For car, tent, and RV camping, a self-inflating memory foam mattress beats an air mattress: it insulates you from the cold ground, needs no pump, and cannot deflate overnight. For backpacking, weight wins — use an insulated inflatable pad with an R-value of 3 or higher.

How do I sleep warm in a tent?

Warmth comes from below first: an insulated mattress or pad on a moisture barrier. Then a sleeping bag rated about 10°F below the forecast low, dry dedicated sleep clothes, a beanie, and a hot water bottle in the footbox. Crack the vents — condensation makes everything cold and damp by morning.

Is sleeping in a car warmer than a tent?

A car blocks wind better than a tent, but bare metal and glass conduct heat away fast. With window covers, an insulating mattress, and a cracked window for condensation, a car sleeps warmer than a tent in the same weather.

Why can't I sleep when camping?

Usually four fixable things: cold seeping up from the ground, light (campgrounds are bright and dawn comes early), noise, and an uncomfortable surface. The first night anywhere is also scientifically worse — the brain keeps one hemisphere semi-alert in new places. Fix the four physical causes and night two is dramatically better.

What R-value do I need for camping?

R-value measures how well a pad resists heat loss to the ground: R1–2 is fine for warm summer nights, R3–4 covers three-season camping, and R4.5 or higher is for snow and deep cold. When in doubt, go higher — you can vent heat, but you can't create insulation.
